What If Eris Rules Zero?

Three years ago I wrote "Is 10 Ruled by Eris?" after years of tossing the idea around here and there and almost a year of full-on contemplation about the 10/1 pattern. I landed on Eris: the Wheel of Fortune, the upheaval, the discord, the conversation nobody wants to have.
This morning I woke up thinking about this - and I just realized that it is exactly three years to the day that I wrote the original article - HA - and decided the whole question was backwards. What if Eris doesn't rule the 10? What if she rules the zero? Hmmmm.
The apple, again
You remember the story. Eris, goddess of strife, doesn't get invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. Shocking. She handles it with all the maturity you'd expect from a deity and rolls a golden apple onto the table, marked "To the Fairest." Hera, Athena and Aphrodite all want it. Paris gets stuck judging. Helen gets handed out as a door prize. Troy burns.
Look at what Eris actually did. Nothing. She didn't fight anybody or overthrow anything. She put one small thing on the table and let everybody else do the rest. That's what a zero does. On its own, it's nothing. Add it to a sum, and nothing happens. Stick it on the end of a 1, and you've got a 10. A 2 becomes 20. A 3 becomes 30. Yes, I know, that's place value and not a cosmic revelation. I'm a numerologist. Reading meaning into the way we write numbers is the job. You have your thing, and I have mine.
Zero has been called emptiness, wholeness, potential, eternity, the beginning and the end. Most numerology books say something along those lines and then run for the 11. I think zero has another job nobody talks about. It interrupts the pattern and forces it to turn into something else. Not destruction for its own sake, but the type of disruption that gets things moving. Zero is the proverbial candle being lit under your arse.
Eris and the planets
Here's the system I work with:
-
1: Sun
-
2: Moon
-
3: Jupiter
-
4: Rahu
-
5: Mercury
-
6: Venus
-
7: Ketu
-
8: Saturn
-
9: Mars
-
11: Pluto
-
22: Uranus
-
33: Neptune
I've always read the 10 as a combination of the Sun and Uranus. This was always somewhat cumbersome and problematic because many of us out there, myself included, see Master 22 as being ruled by Uranus. If zero is Eris, then every multiple of ten is another planet with Eris attached:
-
10: Sun + Eris
-
20: Moon + Eris
-
30: Jupiter + Eris
-
40: Rahu + Eris
-
50: Mercury + Eris
-
60: Venus + Eris
-
70: Ketu + Eris
-
80: Saturn + Eris
-
90: Mars + Eris
The planet leading the compound number doesn't lose its meaning. Eris just walks in and starts something. So the question isn't only what that planet stands for. It's what happens when that planet gets hit with discord, exclusion, or something nobody saw coming.
Now, I do equate the numbers 1 to 78 with Tarot cards, just like others (Dusty Bunker and Sepharial come to mind), BUT if you are used to RWS meanings, some of these (well, OK, most of these) are not going to jibe with what you know. This is a big reason why I work with the TdM. The interpretations of that deck are more in line with what I have discovered about numbers over the decades. These meanings can work with an RWS deck or one of its clones, but they won't all link up nicely.
10: The Wheel of Fortune
This is La Roue de Fortune, the literal translation of which is Fortune's Wheel (a medieval torture device). Luck turns. The people on top come down, the people at the bottom go up, and nobody gets to grab the wheel. You can influence where you land, but you don't control every turn.
The Sun wants to know who you are and who's in charge. Eris is the one who shows up and challenges the answer. The boss gets questioned. Your identity gets knocked sideways. Something everyone agreed was legitimate is suddenly up for debate. Then the wheel starts moving, and just like the golden apple, one small thing sets off a chain of consequences nobody asked for.
20: Judgement
Le Jugement. An angel blows a trumpet, and people climb out of a tomb. Nobody asked them to awaken, but something called them out, and they can't go back in.
The Moon rules memory, family, ancestors, belonging and emotional security. Put Eris on it, and it all gets loud. Someone who was left out of the family demands to be recognized. A family secret won't stay buried. An old emotional agreement that everyone has been tiptoeing around gets challenged. The trumpet goes, and the old arrangement can't carry on the way it was. The two vibration "just knows" and once you know something, you can't unknow it. This isn't chaos for fun. The discord digs up what has to be dealt with before anything can be renewed.
30: The 4 of Wands
Card 30 of the Tarot is the 4 of Wands, and three is Jupiter: expansion, growth, beliefs, and the social and philosophical structures we use to make sense of the world. The 4 of Wands is a structure, a foundation others can build on. Eris wants to know who gets in. Can the structure make room for new people, new ideas, new possibilities? Does growth mean redrawing the boundaries we drew? The discord may not be blocking the development. It may be pointing at where the development has to happen.
Why not just keep Uranus as zero?
That's a fair question. Uranus already covers disruption, sudden change, rebellion and liberation. Why add Eris? Here's my working answer. Uranus is the break. Eris is the grievance that explains why the break was coming. Uranus says, "Something has to change." Eris says, "Who got left out, what did you ignore, and what happens now that you can't ignore it anymore?"
They can look the same from the outside. They aren't, though, once you crawl around inside them. Eris might be the disputed claim that sets off something much bigger, and I want to test that in natal numeroscopes, transits and event charts.
The rest of the tens
40: Rahu conjunct Eris Rahu is ambition, appetite, wanting what's on the other side of the fence. With Eris, it's going after something you were shut out of, or crossing a line people insist stays closed. Rahu also magnifies appetite and attachment, so a legitimate grievance can turn into obsession, rivalry, or winning at any cost. The question is whether the disruption opens a road to real growth or turns into a never-ending fight for recognition.
50: Mercury conjunct Eris Mercury runs communication, information, commerce and analysis. With Eris, you get dissent, disputed facts, and the truth nobody wants to say out loud. The conversation nobody wants to have. The fact that changes how everyone sees the situation. The question that knocks over the accepted explanation. It also covers information twisted by arguing, rivalry or straight-up provocation. Every comment section ever.
60: Venus conjunct Eris Venus is relationships, harmony, shared values, beauty and the agreements that keep people together. Eris shows you what's under the nice surface. Someone has been keeping the peace by swallowing what they need. Two sets of values can't be reconciled with politeness anymore. A relationship has to renegotiate because one person never got an equal say. The disruption tells you whether the harmony was real or just the absence of an open fight.
70: Ketu conjunct Eris Ketu is detachment, release, spiritual insight and letting go of what you've outgrown. Rahu goes toward involvement. Ketu walks away. Add Eris, and it's the moment you realize you don't belong in a structure, a belief system or a relationship anymore. The discord isn't someone demanding to be let in. It's someone refusing to keep taking part. Being excluded and choosing to leave are not the same thing. There's a shadow side too. Is the withdrawal freedom, or has resentment made staying impossible? The work of 70 is telling liberation apart from dragging the same fight to a new location.
80: Saturn conjunct Eris Saturn is boundaries, responsibility, authority, discipline and institutions. Eris is the challenge that shows where those structures have gone rigid, unjust, or incapable of change. What happens when the people shut out of the benefits start questioning the rules? When responsibility means reform instead of obedience? When an institution has to face what its own limits have cost? Or the discord digs in, and both sides refuse to give an inch.
90: Mars conjunct Eris Mars is action, assertion, conflict, courage and competition, and Eris is Mars's sister, so this one is family business. Grievance and action are tied together. Does a sense of injustice produce courage, or revenge? When does defending a principle turn into keeping the fight going? Mars and Eris can mean acting decisively when something needs challenging. It can just as easily mean not noticing that the fight stopped serving its purpose a long time ago.
Then there are numbers like 100, 200 and 1000. Does a second zero double down on Eris, or does something else happen? I don't know yet, and I'm not going to pretend I do. I'm also not declaring Eris the ruler of zero as some settled absolute fact. It's a work in progress, and I'm excited about it. It also bears mentioning that I work with 0-99. Other numbers exist, yes, and when clients see repeating numbers of more than two digits I cheerfully interpret them but for the charting that I do 0-99 works fine.
Eris in the human consciousness is still new
Eris the goddess is ancient, but Eris the planet was discovered in 2005, and its discovery helped start the argument that got Pluto demoted to a dwarf planet. Eris disrupted the arrangement on her way into the astronomical and astrological treehouses. Of course she did.
It took decades for Pluto to find a place in astrology, and plenty of astrologers rolled their eyes at first. Eris is at that stage now. Some astrologers use it in natal and mundane charts. Others don't think it adds enough to bother with. I happen to like this stage. We don't inherit a finished meaning. We get to watch it form, compare notes and test it. Maybe numerology has something to add.
The question changed
In 2023 I asked whether Eris rules the 10. Three years later, I think I was looking at the wrong half of the number. The Sun was never the problem. The zero was the mystery.
If this holds, Eris, as a planetary energy, doesn't push the other planetary rulers off their thrones. She works with them, and she brings disruption, exclusion, contention and transformation into every compound with a zero in it. It needs a lot more work, especially across the full run of the Tarot. But I have a feeling about this one.
Eris never needed the seat of honour to change what happens at the table. All she ever needed was a golden apple.
